Tatooine: More Science, Less Fiction

July 8, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 2:45 pm

Astronomer through telescope to the sky

IN CELEBRATION OF THE 2017 SUMMER READING PROGRAM!

During the past fifteen years, astronomers have discovered many planets orbiting one or both stars of a dual-star system. These worlds with two suns present very interesting cases for studying habitability as they are subject to radiation from two stars. Dr. Nader Haghighipour, an associate astronomer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa Institute for Astronomy, will present a review of the detection of planets in binary stars and discuss how life can originate on these planets and sustain for a long time. This 45-minute program is suitable for ages 12 and older.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i, Hawaii State Federal Credit Union, Meadow Gold Dairies, Hawaiian Electric Companies, HMS Host, Hansen Distribution Group, Roberts Hawaii, Mitsunaga & Associates, Aloha United Way, and the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation. This is a production of the University of Hawaii at Manoa Outreach College’s Statewide Cultural Extension Program with additional funding and support provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and the University of Hawaii.

Program schedule is subject to change. Contact the library 10 days in advance to request a sign language interpreter or if special accommodations are needed.
