Hanaire of Sadou (Flower Vases of Tea Ceremony)

Hanaire made by Shofu Kai ceramists of the Hawaii Potters' Guild

This exhibit of traditional hanaire is presented by Shofu Kai, a group of ceramists at the Hawai’i Potters’ Guild who have been studying together to learn about the artistry of utensils used in the Japanese tea ceremony, a cornerstone of Japanese culture. The hanaire (flower vase) with chabana (flowers) and ojiku (scroll) are prominently displayed in the alcove of a tea room.  Each guest in a tea ceremony visits the alcove and respectfully views these tea utensils prior to the…

An exhibition of Sumi-e artwork by students of local instructor and artist Hisae Shouse.  In the Japanese art of Sumi-e, artists use simple materials, such as black ink and water, to express the essence of a subject with a variety of tones and dynamic brush strokes. Join our LEGO Wall community!  Children, teens and families are encouraged to imagine, create, share and build with thousands of LEGO pieces and figurines.  This free, open, community build takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm and on Tuesdays from 2:00 pm to 6:30 pm.  Space is limited.  Creations remain on our LEGO Wall for 1 month.  New creations go up on the first day of the month that the library is open.
