(FREE service to all HSPLS
patrons)
The HSPLS HI Tech Academy is a comprehensive and technical education program
designed to provide the people of Hawaii with access to in-demand software and
technical skills to improve their personal development and professional
advancement. The primary goal of these digital resources is to equip Hawaii’s
people to participate and succeed in the 21st century workforce.
The Academy features e-learning, software licenses, and official Microsoft
course materials, which will enable users to qualify and acquire Microsoft
Office Specialist or Certified Professional Certifications.
HSPLS is the first library system in the world to launch a
Microsoft IT Academy, being free to all its library patrons.
Funding for the HI Tech Academy is provided by the Federal Library Services and
Technology Act (LSTA), which is administered by the Institute of Museum and
Library Services (IMLS).

GRANT WILL PROVIDE OVER 700 COMPUTERS TO LIBRARIES
Hawaii's Access for All Grant, courtesy of a $2.4 million federal
stimulus funds package, will provide the Hawaii State Public Library
System (HSPLS) with 768 public access computers in HSPLS branches
throughout the state by spring 2012. This was made possible by the
federal Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP), funded by the
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, and leveraged with Bill
& Melinda Gates Foundation Opportunity Online funds. Matching funds were
provided by the Friends of the Library of Hawaii, the Omidyar Ohana
Fund, through the Hawaii Community Foundation, and the Alexander &
Baldwin Foundation.
Among these new computers are 54 ADA-accessible workstations, including
computers, furniture, hardware, and software including JAWS and ZoomText
to assist vision-impaired patrons. Each HSPLS library now has at least
one of these accessible workstations.
To help prepare for new public access and staff equipment, HSPLS
provided staff with 107 live training sessions which were attended by
474 staff members. We have subscribed to the Webex web-based training
solution, and have already begun providing staff with online and remote
training opportunities. |
LIBRARIES PROVIDE FREE PROGRAMS FOR ALL AGES
Public libraries statewide provide free multi-cultural, year-round
programs that encourage a love of reading and life-long learning.
Programs include preschool storytimes, storytelling events, author
talks, informational seminars, and much more. For more information
or to view a schedule of upcoming programs,
KINDLE USERS CAN NOW ACCESS AND DOWNLOAD eBOOKS
Library patrons with Kindle eBook readers can now access and download
nearly 50,000 eBooks from the Hawaii State Public Library System's (HSPLS)
website, thanks to Amazon and OverDrive, the system's primary provider
of eBooks and digital audiobooks.
To browse the HSPLS eBook collection,
click
here.
Kindle users must select the “Now Available" button. Users can access
eBook titles for all ages on a wide variety of topics including fiction,
non-fiction, health, fitness, business, religion, cooking,
self-improvement, and biographies.
Through the convenience of remote access, library patrons with a valid
library card may borrow up to ten eBooks free of charge for up to three
weeks without traveling to the library or incurring overdue charges.
For more information, contact your local library. |
