Furlough Days
The Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS) has completed
negotiations with the Hawaii Government Employees Association (HGEA)
on a Supplemental Agreement for the Fiscal Biennium (2009-2011).
The Hawaii State Public Library System is immediately
implementing” Furlough Days” beginning on Wednesday, December
16.
According to the HSPLS-HGEA Supplemental Agreement, all
full-time HGEA employees within HSPLS will be placed on unpaid
furlough for 15 days in FY 2010 (December 1, 2009-June 30,
2010). In addition, all full-time HGEA employees within HSPLS
will be placed on unpaid furlough for 15 days in FY 2011 (July
1, 2010-June 30, 2011). A schedule of these furlough days will
be announced at a later date.
Following is the schedule of Library “Furlough Days” for the
remainder of FY 2010; all administrative offices and public
libraries will be closed:

In addition, six public libraries normally closed on Fridays –
Aiea, Hawaii Kai, Kaimuki, Liliha, Manoa, and Makawao (Maui) –
will be closed on March 4, 11, and 18.

Mountain View Public & School Library (Big
Island) will close temporarily beginning on Tuesday, December 1
for interior renovation and maintenance. The book drop will also
be closed. An announcement will be made when the Library is
scheduled to reopen. During the closure, patrons may visit the
nearest libraries during normal public service hours – Hilo
Public Library (300 Waianuenue Avenue; telephone: 933-8888) or
Keaau Public & School Library (16-571 Keaau-Pahoa Road;
telephone: 982-4281) – for their library service needs.
Pearl City Public Library (Oahu) is scheduled
to undergo an air-conditioning upgrade project starting Monday,
September 14, 2009. The Library will remain open and maintain
the same public service hours for the duration of the renovation
project which is scheduled to be completed in approximately
eight months. The book drop will remain open after hours. The
majority of the construction work will occur in the parking lot.
During the project, some parking adjustments will be made and
modified parking spaces will be available. Patrons are advised
to use caution when using the parking lot and watch for new
informational signs that will be posted. All
previously-scheduled library programs will be suspended until
the project is completed due to limited available parking. An
announcement will be made when the renovation work is completed.
