AROUND THE PACIFIC

REARRANGEMENT

The Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped will be rearranging the front rooms of the library in the next few months. We thank our donors for the funds that made it possible to hire an architect who will help make the rooms more accessible, efficient, beautiful and comfortable for everyone. If you have any suggestions on how to make this library better for you, call us now! All suggestions will be taken into consideration. Since we anticipate the planning to move quickly, your input is needed as soon as possible.

RADIO READING SERVICE

What's with Radio Reading Service, you ask? RRS changed the types of materials read because of the arrival of Newsline. The new program was only on for a few days before it was changed back to the old format.

Because Newsline equipment is still being adjusted to access the Honolulu Advertiser online, Radio Reading Service will continue to read the Honolulu Advertiser live daily at 7-8 a.m. until it is accessible by telephone.

February 2000 marked the beginning of the year of the Golden Dragon. Fortunes can be made this year. The Dragon year is one of excess, both good and bad.

CAUTION

Patrons walking to the library: please be aware that there is a lot of traffic with big trucks going in and out of the street fronting the library (which goes to the golf course). The City & County yard across the street is leased out to contractors who are doing work for the City. Because these large trucks sometimes are delayed on the street, there is a slow down of cars going and coming out of the golf course. The liaison was contacted regarding the hazards and he has assured the library that measures will be put into place to protect the safety of pedestrians, i.e., there will be a person to guide trucks as they back up; letters will be written to the companies involved to alert their drivers about the safety of pedestrians, especially LBPH's patrons who walk to the library.

Other efforts for safety: the library will request that the State extend the railing along the sidewalk from the LBPH parking lot, along the side of the Waikiki-Kapahulu Public Library to Kapahulu Avenue.

AT THE ACADEMY

Home grown poet MAKIA MALO will read a couple of his poems at the Academy of Arts on Wednesday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. His reading will precede the movie THE COLOURS OF PARADISE (RANG-E KHODA).

The movie was directed by last year's Academy Award winner Majid Majidi. The story takes place in Iran and revolves around a student, who returns home from a school for the blind, and his widowed father. Tickets for the movie are $5.00 for the general public, and $3.00 for Academy members. Tickets may be bought at the door on the evening of the movie.

R4R

If you like music, R4R may be for you! It stands for Recordings for Recovery and was founded in Midland, Michigan as a "non-profit organization to promote the use of music with special populations to enhance their quality of life." There is a $10 membership fee for individuals, and a $25 fee for institutions. Fees may be waived for those who cannot afford it. Each order may be for up to 8 tapes, and you may borrow them for 60 days. The cassette tapes will come with a return label. Their collection is extensive with audio cassettes of all kinds: exercise, dance, hymns, classical, C&W, R&B, R&R, songs of the 30's, 40's, some radio and TV comedy shows, and much more. Call Michael at 1-800-292-1192 for more information and catalogs. Their website is: www.r4r.org.

DESCRIPTIVE VIDEOTAPES
The listing of the Descriptive Videotapes (DVT) titles are now available in large type, braille and on cassette. Please contact us if you would like a copy.

So that more patrons will be able to borrow the DVTs, the loan period has been changed from 14 days to 10 days. Please return your DVTs on time so that others will be able to enjoy them.

MANY HAPPY RETURNS

We have noticed that many of you have books which are overdue. Per our loan policy, books are loaned out for one month. There are titles which others are waiting to borrow so please return your books on time.

If for some reason you are not able to listen to the book(s) for a while, please return the book(s) and ask us to keep the title(s) on your request list. We will send you the book(s) again at a later date upon your request.

Please also return your Talking Book Machine (TBM) and/or Cassette Book Machine (CBM) if it is not working properly or if the equipment is not being used for books and magazines provided by LBPH. In the near future, we will be doing an inventory and verifying the equipment loaned out.

VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION

The annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon will be held in March. This is our way of recognizing the invaluable contributions that volunteers make to this library. Some of the volunteers have given over 100 hours of service.

This year's luncheon will be held at The Willows. The guest Master of Ceremonies will be State Librarian,Virginia Lowell.

NALANI OLDS

Nalani Olds, a well-known cultural resource person and accomplished vocalist and soloist, has been performing at libraries throughout the state. The Program which is entitled "He Po'ai Aloha, Encircled with Love, The Musical Legacy of Her Majesty Queen Liliu'okalani" was held at LBPH on February 18, 2000. With her beautiful and powerful voice and aloha, Ms. Olds sang songs and told stories from "The Queen's Songbook" by Her Majesty Queen Liliu'okalani.

Did you know that the way "Aloha Oe" is sung now, is not the way that the Queen wrote it? Those present were able to hear the original "Aloha Oe" and to sing along. Efforts are being made to have the song sung the way the Queen wrote it.

If you missed this wonderful presentation, there are still programs scheduled. The last program will be held in April. Please call LBPH if you are interested in finding out the schedule.

HOLIDAYS WHEN THE LIBRARY IS CLOSED

The library will be closed on the following holidays:

Monday, March 27: Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day

Friday, April 21: Good Friday

Saturday, Sunday, Monday, May 27-29: Memorial Day

Monday, June 12: King Kamehameha Day

European researchers discovered that chocolates, especially dark chocolates, contain strong antioxidants. These antioxidants, called catechins, can rival those found in fruits and vegetables. Eating two or three chocolates a week may be healthy. Life is good.
