NLS EQUIPMENT AUDIT
The Library of Congress, National Library Service for the Blind and
Physically Handicapped (NLS), will be conducting an audit of equipment made
available through this program some time this year. As these items are the
property of the Federal Government, we need to account for them.
Letters are being sent out to inactive patrons to retrieve equipment not
being used and books which are overdue. If you fall into this
category, please return the items as soon as possible. You do not need to wait
for a letter.
We greatly appreciate your assistance in
helping us prepare for the audit.
LARGE EDITION TIME MAGAZINE
LBPH has a subscription to the Large edition of Time Magazine. There are no
advertisements except for the covers. We also received some donated copies of
older issues. Call us if you want to receive this magazine.
Pet ownership has been shown to improve both mental and
physical well-being. In a study of heart attack survivors, those who owned pets
were much less likely to suffer a second heart attack as were those who didn't
own pets. Owners of Pet Rocks were not studied.
VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION
The annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon was held on March 27, 2000 at The
Willows. Guest Mistress of Ceremonies was Virginia Lowell, State Librarian, who
did a great job. Caroline Spencer, Director of the Public Libraries Branch, was
also on hand to make the presentations.
Special recognition was given to volunteers who retired: Flora Onomoto
(narrator) and Lucille Metcalf (Aloha Transcribers). Lucille was present to
receive her special tribute for her many years of dedicated service.
On a sad note, two volunteers who provided many hours to help make LBPH what
it is today, were remembered. Mr. Fred King, Chairperson of the Hui o Na
Makamaka (Friends of the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped) and
Mr. Eiro Yamada passed away. Charter Board Members since 1979, they were
acknowledged for their many projects, e.g. purchasing of a copier enlarger,
bringing in a braille specialist, purchasing of Perkins Braillers for braille
classes, obtaining grants, sponsoring programs, etc. The circulation desk and
some of the bookshelves you see when you enter the library were built by Mr.
Yamada. Both men were truly 'Friends of LBPH' . Their commitment and dedication,
far beyond the call, will always be remembered. They will be missed.
Entertainment was provided by Nalani
Olds and Van Horn Diamond who took the audience musically through the Hawaiian
Islands. Makia Malo joined Ms. Olds and Mr. Diamond during the segment on
Molokai. In addition, Chris Cerna provided the background music on the grand
piano as guests arrived. Kanoe Souza (narrator) did serveral impromptu hulas.
The volunteers, special guests and the atmosphere and food of The Willows
made for a very memorable and enjoyable day.
DISASTER PLANNING
On May 12, 2000, Diane Phillips, American Red Cross, Hawaii State Chapter,
did a presentation on 'Create a Family Disaster Plan' which focused on learning how to make sure
your whole family is prepared and has a plan in case of an emergency. This is
now hurricane season so the information was very useful.
For those who were not able to attend, there are still print handouts
available.
LBPH also has copies of 'Disaster Preparedness for People with Disabilities'
in large type and on cassette (HIC 1102). Please contact the library if you are
interested in any of the above.
SIDEWALK RAILING
Last month, additional railings along the sidewalk were installed. The
railing starts by the crosswalk on Kapahulu Avenue and continues on the left
side of the sidewalk when walking toward the library. The three breaks in the
railing are for the entrances and exits from the parking lots. One entry/exit
for the Waikiki-Kapahulu Library, and an entry and an exit for LBPH. Many
thanks to the HSPLS administration for the funding, and to DAGS for their
promptness in completing the project.
