MS. SUGIMURA GOES TO WASHINGTON

Sue Sugimura will be on the National Advisory Group on Collection Building Activities beginning 2001, for a two-year term. She will represent the Western Region of NLS. This group is composed of 4 librarians (one from each Region), 4 consumers, and representatives from 3 consumer groups. Sue will attend annual meetings in Washington, D.C. and take concerns from the Region, which includes us here in Hawaii. It's a privilege for Hawaii to be on this committee, also a great responsibility. Congratulations to Sue! So, call Sue and give her your input about books, concerns and suggestions you have!

2001: A BRAILLE CALENDAR

Braille calendars for the year 2001 are available. To request a copy call LBPH at 733-8444. Neighbor Islanders can call toll free at 1-800-559-4096.

YEAR OF THE SNAKE

2001 is the year of the Snake. People born in this year, are deep. They speak very little and possess tremendous wisdom. They are fortunate with money. Vanity is the snake's weak point.

LBPH'S 70th ANNIVERSARY

Keep the date, Saturday, July 21, 2001, open for the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped's 70th anniversary celebration. The goals for this celebration are to promote awareness of LBPH's services to our patrons, their families, and the community at large. Other organizations who serve the blind will also be there to talk about their services. It will be informative and entertaining, as well, with guest musicians. Plan to attend.

HELP! TAXES!

Outreach Tax Service, a joint federal and state tax help service may be available at LBPH, in February or March. This service can help you with current tax problems, as well as retroactive concerns.

Before we arrange for this service, we need to know if there is any interest. If you want this service here at LBPH, call us and let us know the following:

I want help on:

a) current state tax forms

b) past state tax problems

c) current federal forms

d) past federal tax problems

If there is sufficient interest, we will coordinate the date and time with the tax service and inform you by mail.

TIME MAGAZINE

We have received word that the large print edition of Time Magazine has ceased publication as of November 27, 2000.

Life is like a hot bath, the longer you linger, the more wrinkled you get.

NO NLS FLEXIBLE DISC

NLS will no longer be producing magazines and periodicals on flexible disc. As of January 2001, "Talking Book Topics" (TBT) and other NLS magazines and periodicals on flexible disc (FD) will no longer be available. The existing titles will be shifted to audio-cassette format.

Patrons who are receiving TBT on flexible disc will automatically receive the cassette format, unless they request another format by contacting LBPH.

TBT will continue to be available in large-print, audio cassette and computer diskette formats. It will also be available online at: www.loc.gov/nls/tbt

Contact LBPH if you would like to subscribe to the TBT (bi-monthly catalog of cassette books) or if you would like to change the format that you are now receiving.
