OPENBOOK

A donated computer with Windows '98 Second Edition, JAWS for Windows and a Hewlett-Packard scanner with Openbook is available for use at LBPH. There is also a 17-inch monitor for those who are partially sighted.

Openbook is a scanning software that runs on the computer along with the scanner. It will allow you to scan printed material and have the synthetic speech read aloud the text that was scanned. The speech synthesizer used is either Eloquence/ViaVoice or the Accent PC.

You can record the reading or save your scanned material to a floppy 3.5-inch diskette to take with you so that you could read it on another computer or portable braille device.

Minimal training will be provided. We will not teach you how to use a computer - you'll have to go somewhere else for that kind of training.

To learn more about this new equipment and to arrange for the minimal training, please call the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped to setup an appointment. After the minimal training the only thing we ask is that you make use of the equipment - its for you to use!

All of this is FREE!

2002 COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT
ADVISORY GROUP

Ms. Sue Sugimura, Public Services Librarian, will again be representing the librarians in the western region of the network of libraries serving the blind and physically handicapped. The meeting will be held in Washington, D.C. from May 22-24, 2002.

This group is made up of 4 librarians and 4 reader-at-large representatives from each of the 4 regions (Northern, Southern, Midlands, Western), representatives from the American Council of the Blind, Blinded Veterans Association and the National Federation of the Blind and a librarian representing children and young adults.

Please provide your input about books, concerns, suggestions so that Sue can share your comments at the meeting.

RETIREMENT

Ms. Betsy Ito, Library Technician in the Public Services Section, retired at the end of December after 40 years of state service. Ms. Ito was an integral part of the development and implementation of the programs for the handicapped and state supported institutions. Her skills and knowledge have been a great asset to the program over the years and will be missed.

When you call, you may still have Ms. Ito answering the phone as she has been filling in until the position is permanently filled.

She is looking forward to her retirement and we all wish her the best!

DELAY IN MAIL SERVICE

There has been a delay in mail service for some of you. The books and machines are being mailed out, but it is taking much longer for some patrons to receive them.

If, after a week, you have not received the items requested please contact us. We will follow-up on your request.

We suggest that you not wait until the last minute to request books so you will always have a supply of them in case there is a delay in the mail service.

Just a reminder...if the library is closed, you may leave a message on the answering machine. Neighbor island patrons can call 1-800-559-4096.

NEWSLINEÆ

National Federation of the Blind NEWSLINEÆ went nationwide on March 1, 2002. NFB-NEWSLINEÆ transfers the archived text of newspapers into synthesized speech which eligible patrons may access from any touch-tone phone.

Patrons of this newly expanded free library service will now dial the toll-free number, 1-888-882-1629, to access this service. From the Wall Street Journal to USA Today, the Milwaukee Journal to the Honolulu Advertiser, NFB-NEWSLINEÆ offers a choice of over 50 daily and Sunday papers.

To be eligible, library patrons must be blind or visually impaired, and have subscribed to this free service through a NFB-NEWLINEÆ application. (Patrons who have previously signed up will continue to use their assigned ID number and security code for the expanded service.)

To request an application, contact LBPH or the National Federation of the Blind at (410) 659-9314, extension 356. Applications are also available at the Web site: www.nfb.org.
