Starting June 17, 2020, limited computer access is available by reservation in 48 of the 51 library branches. Library staff will wear masks and gloves and practice social distancing. Equipment will be cleaned between each 60-minute session. Temporary hours and locations may change in future weeks based on current public health conditions.
How do patrons make a reservation to use the computers?
There are two ways to make an appointment. Patrons can make an online reservation or call their local library branch and speak with a library staff member.
•When will patrons be able to access library computers?
Computers will be accessible by reservation only, Monday – Friday, during the open hours of the library branch.
•Which Hawaii State Public Library System locations will have computers available?
All libraries except for three libraries on Oahu, the Hawaii State Library, Liliha and McCully-Moiilili locations.
•How will patrons enter the building for their reservation?
Patrons are asked to arrive 10 minutes prior to their reservation so they can be checked in. Staff will do a brief introduction to the protocols for entry into the building and using the computer session and then patrons will be lead into the library for their computer time.
•Can patrons bring someone with them?
In order to practice social distancing and limit the number of people in the building, we ask that only the patron with the reservation come into the library. Exceptions may be made for patrons who need the assistance of one (1) person or a parent who may have a single child with them.
•Can patrons use the computers as they would normally, or is use restricted in any way?
We ask that patrons kokua their neighbors and only use the computer access for priority needs, such as: job searching, filling out the Census, filing for unemployment benefits, maintaining email contact with friends and family, business needs, etc. so that those who need it will have a chance. Patrons will be able to print during their session.
•How long will each computer reservation last?
Each session will be a maximum of 60 minutes long. In order to provide fair access to everyone who may need to use a computer we are limiting each person to a maximum of two (2) sessions per day.
•What precautions are library staff taking to protect against COVID-19?
Library staff will wear personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times and will close the library for 15 minutes to clean each computer station used between each session.
•Will patrons be required to wear masks?
Yes. Masks must be worn at all times by both staff and patrons. Face masks should cover nose and mouth at all times.
•If a patron doesn’t have a reservation, will they be able to access the computers at the library?
Maybe. Patrons who make a reservation will be allowed access to the computers first. If a computer time period is not full, a limited number of walk-ins may be accepted, based on available space, on a first-come, first-served basis. We encourage patrons interested in using a computer to make a reservation in order to guarantee a spot.
•How many reservations can a patron make per day?
Patrons can make one computer reservation per day with an additional session if there is an unreserved appointment time available. Unreserved appointment times are offered on a first come-first serve basis. Each patron is limited to no more than a total of two sessions per day.
•Will patrons need to have a library card in order to access the computers?
Yes, patrons will need to have a library card to make a reservation. If you need assistance, please call your local library for help.
