Children’s Day, also known as “Kodomo no Hi” is celebrated in Japan on May 5^th of every year. Formerly known as “Boy’s Day,” the national holiday is meant to celebrate and honor children. It is associated with traditions such as hanging colorful koi decorations, displaying Japanese warrior dolls and model samurai armor. Library staff will be demonstrating how to fold Children’s Day themed origami. Skill level is basic to intermediate. After the demonstration, attendees will be allowed to fold what ever origami creation they would like, time permitting. Space is limited. Please call 808-586-3529 to reserve a spot. Materials will be provided.

Judith Jenya discusses her memoir, Memories Do Not Burn: Bringing Hope and Resilience to Children of War, and shares how we can help out in today’s troubled times. She is a graduate of the UH Richardson School of Law, practiced law in Honolulu, and is also a poet, painter, and Nobel Peace Prize nominee. The program will take place in the Hawaii State Library’s First Floor Reading Room and is suitable for adults.

Enjoy a free concert by local community choir, Voices of Aloha, in the lobby of the Hawaii State Library. Our 40-voice ensemble will present “Songs of Stage and Screen,” featuring music made famous from Broadway shows and Hollywood movies.
