ʻUlana Lauhala Workshop

March 22, 2025

Images of lauhala fan and hands holding lauhala anthuriums

Join Kumu Naomi Nascimento of Oʻahu for FREE hands-on lauhala workshops! In each 2.5- hour workshop you’ll be guided step-by-step to create your own beautiful peʻahi (fan) or anthurium flower using a simple weaving pattern. You’ll also learn important terms and gain insight into the preparation of lauhala, a traditional material used in Hawaiian crafts. A
limited number of additional kits will be available for purchase to continue exploring this unique art form.

Naomi Nascimento joined Ulana me ka Lokomaika’i in 2019, where she began learning the art of pāpale weaving under her kumu, Mariko Kobayashi. She continues to carry on the
traditions taught to her by Mariko, who studied under the guidance of Aunty Gladys Grace. Naomi’s passion for weaving extends beyond pāpale and she enjoys creating a variety of smaller projects. As a kumu, Naomi is committed to perpetuating the art of lauhala weaving and instilling in her haumana the cultural values passed down from our kupuna. In the words of Aunty Gladys, “E nānā ka maka, e ho’olohe ka pepeiao, e hana me ka lima,” (Look, listen and do).
