This month’s Book Club pick is 1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created by Charles Mann. Mann dives deep into the legacy of the Columbian Exchange, the ecological upheaval that occurred when plants and animals from the “Old” world suddenly began mixing with those of the “New.” Before that, there were no tomatoes in Italy, no chocolate in Switzerland, no potatoes in Ireland. Cockroaches, grasses, honeybees, and bacteria all encountered new habitats, beginning the process of creating the familiar world we know today.
