Chawan: Tea Bowls of the Japanese Tea Ceremony

December 1, 2019 - December 31, 2019

Chawan

Sadou, the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, is a cornerstone of Japanese culture.  One of the most important utensils in a tea ceremony is the chawan, or tea bowl, since the green tea called matcha is made in and drank from the chawan.  In Japanese ceramics, nothing is held in higher esteem than the chawan.  Shofu Kai has been studying what makes the old, traditional chawan so valuable and cherished.

Chawan will be on display next to the Adult Reference Desk inside the library.

This exhibit is presented by Shofu Kai, a group of ceramists at the Hawai’i Potter’s Guild who meet to study and learn about the artistry of Japanese tea ceremony utensils.

If you need an auxiliary aid/service or other accommodation due to a disability, please contact the library at least 7 days prior to the program date. We will make every attempt to fulfill all requests for accommodations. All programs are subject to change. For a list of upcoming library events, visit www.librarieshawaii.org/events.
