China’s Emerging Inter-network Society – The Rise of Public Advocacy in the Digital ‘Public Sphere’

Dr. Yujing Shen Tu will present her proposed project which analyzes how digital public sphere facilitating the Chinese grassroots advocacy among mainland China, Hongkong and the diaspora communities. It sets to conduct comparative research to examine the rise of rights-based advocacy for “Dao” (倡道) empowered by the digital public sphere, which multiplies the opportunities for dialogues and negotiations with the state, and may even constitute an incipient counter-power in engagement of the interest-based advocacy with Party’s guidance (倡导).

Dr. Shen Tu holds a PhD of Political Science Department, Spark M. Matsunaga institute for Peace & Conflict, University of Hawaii, she also served as Vasey Research Fellow at the Pacific Forum, and Resident Director of China Center of Long Island University. Her primary research interests span the domains of strategic security research in energy and climate change through the lens of digital public sphere and transnational advocacy.
