Now through November 30, come to the 2nd floor display case to view 37 hanaire (flower vases) crafted by members of Shofu Kai, a group of ceramists at the Hawaii Potters’ Guild who have been studying the artistry of utensils used in sadou (Japanese tea ceremony).  On the west side of the mezzanine, 8 upright panels inform visitors of the significance and types of hanaire as well as the ceramists’ philosophy and approaches to their creations.

In the tradition of sadou, the hanaire containing chabana (flowers) and the ojiku (scroll) are prominently displayed in the alcove of a tea room. Each guest in a tea ceremony visits the alcove and respectfully views these tea utensils prior to the ceremony. As such, the hanaire plays a very important role in sadou.

Program schedule is subject to change. Contact the library 10 days in advance to request a sign language interpreter or if special accommodations are needed.
