Hawaii Rondalla: Filipino-American History Month Celebration

October 19, 2024 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Hawaii Rondalla group photo

The rondalla is an ensemble of stringed instruments played with the plectrum (generally known as plectrum instruments). It consists of bandurria, laud, octavina, guitar, and double bass. The rondalla was brought to the Philippines by Spain during the colonization (16th to 19th century). Spain’s rondalla tradition may be traced to the music traditions of the Middle East.

Organized in August 2023, Hawaii Rondalla was founded by Dr. Marie Jocelyn U. Marfil, who serves as the music director. Dr. Marfil is a Professor of Composition and Music Theory at the University of the Philippines (UP). She is also the Artistic Director of the UP Rondalla.

Hawaii Rondalla strives to connect the Filipino community to its cultural roots, while introducing rondalla to a larger audience in Hawaii. Members consist of high school and college students, school teachers, college professors, and various people of the community. Rondalla is a celebrated musical tradition, with sounds that are truly unique to the Philippines.
