How Do I See Inside a Volcano?

September 14, 2024 @ 10:00 am - 10:15 am

Volcano pic

Have you ever wondered what the inside of a volcano looks like?

Join us to learn about volcanoes and how scientists are integrating Hawaiian knowledge into earth science. There will be a fifteen-minute presentation on volcanoes, rock sample show-and-tell, and a hands-on gelatin volcano activity.

Mahinaokalani (Mahina) is a PhD student at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa at the Department of Earth Sciences. She uses the chemical composition of lava samples to interpret what a volcano’s “plumbing system” looks like. Mahina is also passionate about incorporating the knowledge our kūpuna left us about our volcanically active islands into her research and teaching.

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective
communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program, service or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible. Advance requests 48 hours or more before the event are encouraged, but not required. Program schedule is subject to change.
