Students in grades 2 to 5 can begin to earn unique badges in their quest to become master mountaineers through a special reading program that runs through the academic school year. Students choose books on their own reading level with guidance from the children’s librarian to take tests and do projects on their favorites during the school year. Club members will choose their own projects that can be worked on at home or at the library. A special awards ceremony will be held at the end of the academic school year honoring club members for their work. Special badges will be awarded to members who have completed the program by taking test and doing projects.

The badges represent the idea of the ahupua’a, which is depicted by a mountain. The badges (Moana, Kula, Ulao, Mauna) represents each year or level participants master. Members who complete all 4 years will receive a black master badge, Lewa, indicating that they have completed four years of this unique reading program.

Members meet on Wednesdays from 1:30 to take test and work on projects.  The computer lab is available to those wanting to do computer related work. Participants are welcome to seek guidance, take test, or work on projects anytime of the week in addition to Wednesdays.

Program schedule is subject to change. Contact the library 15 days in advance to request a sign language interpreter or if special accommodations are needed.
