In this workshop presented by the Hawai’i council for the Humanities, Sue Cowing will share about the most rewarding experience of her writing life teaching multilingual students at Highlands Intermediate School in Pearl City how to find their voice through poetry. She will use some of the same (for all ages) strategies and writing exercises in this workshop, and participants will spend much of the time writing. For a limited time period after the workshop date, members will be invited to send Sue questions or poem drafts for comment.
Sue Cowing grew up in the hometown of poet Carl Sandburg in Illinois, but has lived her adult life in Honolulu where she writes poetry, fiction, and letters to the editor, but mostly poetry. She has an MFA in Writing (Poetry) from Vermont College and has published poems in a number of local and mainland journals and anthologies. A book length collection of her poems is forthcoming in 2027.
