Photographic Exhibit: The Hawai‘i Nikkei Legacy

October 1, 2019 - October 31, 2019

The Hawaii Nikkei Legacy Exhibit logo

This traveling photographic exhibit will be visiting Kaimuki Library for the month of October.  The exhibit highlights the initial immigration of the Issei, first generation of Japanese immigrants, in the late 1800s to modern day Hawai’i, showing how the Nikkei (overseas Japanese) in Hawai’i have merged their Japanese cultural values with the blend of cultures in Hawai’i.

At the core of the exhibit is the story of the Nisei (second generation) who served in the US armed forces in World War II. The exhibit also depicts the post war accomplishments of the Nisei in Hawai’i. Prominent Japanese Americans from Hawai’i are displayed along with the prefectures in Japan that their ancestors emigrated from.

The intent of the exhibit is to educate people on the story of Hawaii’s Nikkei and to promote goodwill and cross-cultural values between Japan and the United States.

The exhibit will be on display from October 1st to October 31st and may be viewed during the library’s business hours.  Also stay tuned for a scheduled walking tour of the exhibit.  See staff or call for more information.

Mahalo, to the Nisei Veterans Legacy group, the Japan-America Society of Hawaii, the Consulate-General of Japan in Honolulu, and the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii for generously sharing their exhibit with our library.
