Education for Social Action

April 16, 2025 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

The community is invited to listen, learn from and share their views with local, Hawaii and international speakers about a variety of topics through the Global Citizenship Speaker Series.

This presentation features Dr. Mona Kiani who will speak on the purpose of education. While acquiring knowledge and developing critical thinking skills are imperative, the future of the K-12 schooling system is destined for a much greater purpose. Educating for social action proposes a new model for education– an inquiry-based, student and community-centered approach — that elevates the objective of education beyond just acing the test and getting to college. Join us to see how this new purpose for education can revolutionize the Hawaiian education system.

A former middle and high school mathematics teacher, teacher trainer, coach for administrators, and director of partner success at various EdTech startups, Dr. Mona Kiani , founder and CEO of Educate With Purpose, is passionate about transforming the field of education with engaging, real-world learning experiences for students and the community that result in social action. She is passionate about addressing the needs of the whole child and engaging families as partners in that endeavor, especially for the most underserved communities. She works with teachers and leaders worldwide, is invited to speak at international education conferences, and is the 2016 recipient of the National InspirED Changemaker award given by Yale.

The speaker series is presented by the Molokai Bahá’í Community in collaboration with Molokai Public Library to encourage conversations around global issues of importance to Molokai. Everyone is welcome. Light refreshments will be served.

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program, service, or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible. Advance requests 48 hours or more before the event are encouraged, but not required. All programs are subject to change. See a schedule of upcoming events on the HSPLS Events Calendar.
