The community is invited to listen, learn from and share their views with local, Hawaii and international speakers about a variety of topics through the Global Citizenship Speaker Series.
This presentation features a film by filmmaker and ecologist John D. Liu —Hope in A Changing Climate—on successful large-scale land restoration projects.
Two hundred years ago, Molokai had a population of 30,000 and exported food to other islands. Today with one quarter of that population, we import 90% of our food. Traditional farming has disappeared, and large parts of Molokai have experienced soil erosion and loss of native vegetation, with climate change accelerating degradation of the land.
There is hope that this can be reversed. In different parts of the world people are uniting to restore degraded land on a very large scale. In 1995, filmmaker John D. Liu went to the Loess Plateau in China to tell the story of its devastated land and the beginnings of massive restoration efforts. He returned several years later to find the land had become fertile again. Amazing before and after footage shows how the desert region is now covered with forests and farms. Farm incomes tripled and the area is now food secure. The question for discussion is: how can we make the same happen on Molokai?
The speaker series is presented by the Molokai Bahá’í Community in collaboration with Molokai Public Library to encourage conversations around global issues of importance to Molokai. Everyone is welcome. Light refreshments will be served.
Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program, service, or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible. Advance requests 48 hours or more before the event are encouraged, but not required. All programs are subject to change. See a schedule of upcoming events on the HSPLS Events Calendar.
