Sentenced: A Call-To-Action Documentary

March 23, 2025 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Sentenced Movie Poster

Location: Meeting Room (Doors to open at 12:30 p.m.)

The public is invited to attend a special screening of the call-to-action documentary film Sentenced. The film shines a light on the critical issues of literacy and justice, emphasizing how literacy, especially in early childhood, can transform lives and communities.  By underscoring the life-altering impact of literacy access and focusing on individuals affected by low literacy, the film calls for action to prevent similar challenges for future generations.  Executive produced and narrated by NBA superstar and Olympic athlete Stephen Curry.

Message to parents: This film contains adult content that may not be suitable for young audiences. Contains graphic scenes, emotional testimonies and use of profanity.

Following the showing of the film, leaders from local literacy organizations will present initiatives supporting young readers in our community. This will be followed by light refreshments and a chance to explore valuable resources by these local literacy organizations.

Mahalo to Heluhelu Hawai‘i for the opportunity to share this powerful and timely documentary with the public and for helping guide residents to local literacy organizations in the community. Heluhelu Hawai‘i is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing literacy across the state of Hawai‘i. Its mission is to empower individuals and communities through comprehensive literacy programs, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Due to limited seating, please register to reserve your spot for the film screening. You may either sign up in person at the reference desk, call the library at 808-733-8422 or go online by using this Sentenced Film registration form. Walk-ins may be accepted if space is still available.
