Summer Reading Challenge Kick-Off

Join us as we kick-off the 2024 Summer Reading Challenge! This summer’s theme is E Heluhelu Kākou; Moʻolelo, and we will be celebrating the rich and varied stories that shape our communities.

The event will feature:

10:15 a.m. | Opening Remarks (outdoor/lawn tent)

10:30 a.m.  | Hula Ku‘i performance with Huliau (outdoor/lawn tent)
Huliau is noted for their innovative presentations. Artistic Director and Kumu Hula (Dance Master) Michael Pili Pang brings to the stage Hawaiian rituals, myths, and legends with a contemporary flair, to tell the stories of Hawai’i and its rich culture. This is a production of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Outreach College’s Statewide Cultural Extension Program with additional funding provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and the University of Hawai‘i. 

11:00 a.m. | Kapaemahu Film Screening (Hawai‘i & Pacific Reading Room/First Floor)

11:30 a.m.  | Meet Author Malia Maunakea (outdoor/lawn tent)
Malia Maunakea is a Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) writer and the author of Lei and the Fire Goddess.

12:00 p.m. | Ka Makahiki o Nā Manu Nahele – “Year of the Forest Birds” Presentation (Hawaii & Pacific Reading Room/First Floor)
Staff from the Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry & Wildlife will share information about Hawai‘i’s birds, the threats they face, and efforts to resist extinction. The interactive program will also allow you to hear the different birdsongs, watch a brief documentary featuring hula and other practices related to forest birds, take a virtual field trip to a conservation center, and view some creative clips of a youth video challenge on forest birds.

12:15 p.m. | ‘Ukulele Demonstration

There will also be fun activities for all ages!
