Come listen to local historian Boyd Bond talk about King David Kalākaua, who became the very first Monarch or ruler by any name in any country, in the
history of the entire world, to circumnavigate the planet.
“As we celebrate King David Kalākaua in the month of April, on Monday night we’ll hear the tale of the King’s historic voyage in 1881, when he became the first ruler of a country ever recorded to travel completely around the world! But he wasn’t just sight seeing; along his journey he was blessed by Pope Leo XIII, had tea with Queen Victoria,
negotiated trade with Japan and China, and met with Thomas Edison! One of the King’s companions kept a journal, and his Chamberlain also shared stories with his family that have survived to the present, so there is a record to share, and of course the experience left many impressions on the king, influencing the rest of His reign. Please, join us!”
