The Secret World of Viruses

Have you ever been sick with a virus?

Illnesses like the common cold can be caused by extremely tiny microbes called viruses. However, only a small portion of viruses make humans sick. Viruses are found in every environment like the ocean and are in fact beneficial to earth processes.

University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Oceanography PhD candidate, Petra Byl, is fascinated by how the tiniest microorganisms can drive ecosystem-scale processes in our oceans. In this workshop, she will guide you through the nuanced world of viruses and you’ll get a chance to infect a mock host cell.

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program, service or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible. Advance requests 48 hours or more before the event are encouraged, but not required. Program schedule is subject to change.
