Hanafuda Pilina

February 9, 2025 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Photo of pilina hanafuda cards.

Join us for a presentation by Hanafuda Hawaiʻi’s founder, Helen Nakano and her Sensei’s who will tell us the story of Hanafuda Pilina.  These cards turn the game of Hanafuda into a tale about the many different indigenous and invasive plants and animals in the Hawaiian islands.  After that, you’ll get the opportunity to learn and play Hanafuda!   Due to the versatility of the playing style, attendees will be able to learn the Hanafuda Pilina style, while also being able to play the traditional Japanese way.

Did you know that the name Hanafuda translates to flower cards in Japanese, reflecting the beautiful floral designs that adorn each card.  The word Pilina for the Pilina Hanafuda cards come from the Hawaiian language meaning to bond or to connect, capturing the spirt of the game as a means of bringing people together with nature.
