SUMMARY:Pop-Up Exhibit Honoring Honouliuli: 10 Years as a National Historic Site
DESCRIPTION:Location: Adult Reading Room – Hawaii & Pacific Section \n2025 marked the 10th anniversary of Honouliuli National Historic Site’s designation as a national park—a milestone in preserving one of Hawaiʻi’s most powerful World War II stories. \nHidden in a gulch on Oʻahu\, Honouliuli was the largest and longest-used incarceration site in Hawaiʻi during the war. It unjustly held more than 400 Japanese American and European American civilians under martial law\, along with over 4\,000 prisoners of war from Okinawa\, Korea\, Japan\, and Italy. Today\, the park serves as a reminder of the impact of war on civil liberties and human rights. \nTo commemorate this anniversary\, Kaimuki Public Library will be hosting a pop-up exhibit which will be on display in the library throughout the months of February and March.  In addition\, the library will also be offering a recommended reading list along with a book display with titles from this list.   \nMahalo to the U.S. National Park Service for generously allowing the library to display the banners from this pop-up exhibit. To learn more\, visit the U.S. National Park Service’s website and follow @HonouliuliNPS on Honouliuli National Park Service Facebook Page and Honouliuli Nation Park Service Instagram Page. \nAnyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication\, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program\, service\, or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible. Advance requests 48 hours or more before the event are encouraged\, but not required. All programs are subject to change. See a schedule of upcoming events on the HSPLS Events Calendar.

SUMMARY:Shikata Ga Nai: Film Screening & Meet the Cast
DESCRIPTION:Location: Meeting Room \nShikata Ga Nai\, a phrase that means “It cannot be helped” in Japanese is also the title of an independent film that will have a special showing at Kaimuki Public Library. \nIt is 1999\, and Tats is a WWII vet and member of the famed 442 Regimental Combat Team. Tats spends his time gardening\, watching TV\, and talking with an old army buddy. But the quietude in his life conceals his inner struggle. The war has been over for 50 years\, but Tats relives it every day due to a haunting secret about his time in battle. \nInspired by the true life tendencies of many 442 veterans who have never shared their war experiences with family\, Shikata Ga Nai shines a light on the interior battles that these aging heroes have had to face on their own. Written & directed by Eric Nemoto and edited by Denny Hironaga\, the film stars: Dann Seki\, Denise Aiko Chinen\, Devon Nekoba\, Seth Okumura\, and Allan Okubo. \nThis film is recommended for teens and adults and is suitable for those 13 years of age or older due to mature historical themes\, potential emotional intensity\, and discussions of injustice. Parental guidance is suggested.   \nSome of the cast/crew will be available for a Q&A after the film showing.  If time permits\, a 15-minute PowerPoint on the making of the film will also be shown.  Light refreshments will be provided to those in attendance. \nMahalo to the Nisei Veterans Legacy for sponsoring this program.

SUMMARY:Music at the Movies - West Side Story Movie Sing-Along
DESCRIPTION:Location: Meeting Room \nEnjoy the 1961 movie classic West Side Story all over again\, but with an added twist: an audience sing-along!  Mics won’t be provided but you can sing as loud\, as soft or not at all\, from the comfort of your seat! Starring Natalie Wood\, Richard Beymer\, Russ Tamblyn\, Rita Moreno and George Chakaris.  Mahalo to the Friends of Kaimuki Public Library for sponsoring this event.\n \nAnyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication\, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program\, service\, or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible.
