SUMMARY:Music at the Movies - West Side Story Movie Sing-Along
DESCRIPTION:Location: Meeting Room \nEnjoy the 1961 movie classic West Side Story all over again\, but with an added twist: an audience sing-along!  Mics won’t be provided but you can sing as loud\, as soft or not at all\, from the comfort of your seat! How fun is that?  \nThis musical sets the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet against the backdrop of the rivalry of two street gangs\, the Sharks and the Jets\, in New York of the 1950s. A young woman who is sister to the Sharks leader has her first taste of love with the former head of the Jets. \nThis movie is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association. Parental guidance is suggested\, but it’s not generally recommended for very young children due to themes like gang violence\, ethnic slurs\, and mature situations.  The movie was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won 10\, including Best Picture. Starring Natalie Wood\, Richard Beymer\, Russ Tamblyn\, Rita Moreno and George Chakaris.  Mahalo to the Friends of Kaimuki Public Library for sponsoring this event.\n \nAnyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication\, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program\, service\, or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible. Advance requests 48 hours or more before the event are encouraged\, but not required. All programs are subject to change. See a schedule of upcoming events on the HSPLS Events Calendar.

SUMMARY:Voices of Hawaiʻi with Jane Marshall Goodsill
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for a fascinating talk with Jane Marshall Goodsill\, an author\, kamaʻāina\, and oral historian\, as she shares insights about the third volume of her beloved “Voices of Hawaii” anthology. What began as a heartfelt project has blossomed into a rich compilation of oral histories that beautifully captures the diverse experiences of those who have played a role in shaping Hawaiʻi from World War II to today. \nThrough casual interviews with Island residents\, Jane has gathered stories that touch on themes of Island life—like race\, land use\, art\, music\, and the spirit of aloha—creating a collection that showcases both personal and communal narratives reflecting Hawaiʻi’s evolving identity. In this latest volume\, you’ll find even more touching tales that add depth to the Island’s cultural tapestry. Plus\, Jane will share her personal journey of starting this project\, inspired by her desire to learn more about her father\, attorney Marshall Goodsill\, and his legal career after his passing in 2004. We can’t wait to see you there! \nAnyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication\, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program\, service\, or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible. Advance requests 48 hours or more before the event are encouraged\, but not required. All programs are subject to change. See a schedule of upcoming events on the HSPLS Events Calendar. \nFor those of you interested in purchasing an autographed copy of her book\, there will be all three volumes of  Voices of Hawaiʻi available for purchase for $26 per book\, or $50 for two\, or $70 for all three volumes.  Please note that only cash or checks will be accepted as forms of payment.  \nMahalo nui to our Friends of Kaimukī for their help with this program!
