DESCRIPTION:Location: Meeting Room \nEnjoy the movie classic The Sound of Music all over again\, but with an added twist: an audience sing-along!  Mics won’t be provided but you can sing as loud\, as soft or not at all\, from the comfort of your seat! How fun is that? This enduring 1965 Best Picture Oscar winner\, set in 1938 Austria\, tells the tale of a young nun named Maria\, who leaves the convent to become a governess to the Von Trapp family. Upon arriving at the home\, Maria discovers that her new boss\, the “Captain\,” is cold and aloof\, and his seven children are virtual automatons when he is around\, and holy terrors when he is absent. Maria eventually ingratiates herself with the children and begins to fall for the Captain despite his upcoming wedding. \nThis movie has been rated G from the Motion Picture Association (MPA). What began as a heartfelt project has blossomed into a rich compilation of oral histories that beautifully captures the diverse experiences of those who have played a role in shaping Hawaiʻi from World War II to today. \nThrough casual interviews with Island residents\, Jane has gathered stories that touch on themes of Island life—like race\, land use\, art\, music\, and the spirit of aloha—creating a collection that showcases both personal and communal narratives reflecting Hawaiʻi’s evolving identity. In this latest volume\, you’ll find even more touching tales that add depth to the Island’s cultural tapestry. Plus\, Jane will share her personal journey of starting this project\, inspired by her desire to learn more about her father\, attorney Marshall Goodsill\, and his legal career after his passing in 2004. The film follows the journey of a spirited teenager named Moana as she meets the once-mighty demi-god Maui\, and together they traverse the open ocean\, encountering enormous fiery creatures and impossible odds. \nIn keeping with the theme of this year’s summer reading challenge of Mele and in recognition of the Hawaiian language as an official language of the state of Hawaiʻi\, this movie will be shown in the Hawaiian language (ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi) with English subtitles. Hawaiian language translation was provided by UH Manoa Director of the Institute of Hawaiian Language Research Puakea Nogelmeier\, and his team. \nThis film is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association for some scary images and brief thematic elements. DESCRIPTION:Bon Season is upon us!  All are welcome to come and learn dances that are often danced at the bon dance; which for Hawai’i will be until October.  This program is fun for all ages and will be held in the Adult Reading Room! \nFor those of you who aren’t familiar with Bon Dances or Bon Odori\, it is an annual Japanese Dance Festival that occurs during Obon season in the Summer.  It is a celebration of family\, heritage\, tradition\, a celebration of life\, and a way to honor ones’ ancestors.  Children under 12 need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \nPlease bring water\, a sweat towel\, and comfortable footwear as we will be on our feet for most of the program.  Mahalo to the Hawaiʻi Shin Kobukai for doing this program for us!  Due to the limited space\, Pre-registration for this program is advised. DESCRIPTION:Want to get better at reading?  Are you an animal lover?  Why not practice your reading skills by reading aloud to Nugget\, a therapy dog from Pet Partners\, a national organization that has helped to evaluate and support therapy animal teams since 1977.  This is a great opportunity for beginning readers to practice their reading skills with a totally non-judgmental listener. \nDid you know reading to dogs can boost your reading skills in children as well as help with emotional and social skills!? \nThis program is open to people of all ages.  Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult or caregiver.  As spaces are limited\, registration is required as it will be based on a first come first served basis on the day of the program.
