DESCRIPTION:Join us for a film screening of Mālama Mākua and a Q&A session by the film’s director Mikey Inouye and University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Professor Kyle Kajihiro. \nMālama Mākua tells the story of a grassroots organization in Hawaiʻi engaged in a multi-generational fight to protect the sacred lands of Mākua Valley from military destruction. Nestled on the far West Side of Oʻahu\, Hawaiʻi\, Mākua is a sacred valley where Native Hawaiian creation stories tell of earth and sky deities giving birth to the first people. Once a thriving community rich in natural abundance\, Mākua was taken by the U.S. Army\, which forcibly evicted its residents. \nWinner of the Audience Choice Award at the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival\, Mālama Mākua traces the valley’s transformation from a place of deep cultural roots to a rallying point for grassroots activism. With the U.S. Army’s leases on the lands set to expire in 2029\, the call for Mākua’s return grows more urgent than ever. \nPresented by ACLU of Hawaiʻi. \nAnyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication\, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program\, service\, or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible.
