SUMMARY:1\,000 Books Before Kindergarten!
DESCRIPTION:Parents and caregivers are the first education providers during the 0-5 early critical years. The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge is a simple  and fun program that promotes reading to  newborns\, infants\, and toddlers and encourages parent and child bonding through reading. This challenge is a simple\, yet fun approach to establishing strong early literacy skills and helps young children gain the confidence necessary to become strong readers. \nThe concept is simple: read a book\, any book to your child\, with the goal of reading 1\,000 before kindergarten.  Each participant will receive a special passport and may have their passports “stamped” for each 100 books read.   \nPick up your child’s packet when you register at our Children’s Reference Desk. \nThis program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library Kapolei. \nAnyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication\, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program\, service\, or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible. Advance requests 48 hours or more before the event are encouraged\, but not required. All programs are subject to change.

SUMMARY:Waianae Book Club
DESCRIPTION:This book will be discussed in May 2026 at the in-person book club meeting at the library. There is no longer a virtual/online book club. \nThe Four Winds by Kristin Hannah\nTexas\, 1934. Millions are out of work and a drought has broken the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as the crops are failing\, the water is drying up\, and dust threatens to bury them all. One of the darkest periods of the Great Depression\, the Dust Bowl era\, has arrived with a vengeance. \nIn this uncertain and dangerous time\, Elsa Martinelli—like so many of her neighbors—must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or go west\, to California\, in search of a better life. The Four Winds is an indelible portrait of America and the American Dream\, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation. \nFrom the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Great Alone comes an epic novel of love and heroism and hope\, set against the backdrop of one of America’s most defining eras—the Great Depression. \nNovember 2025 was the last online book club meeting for the Waianae Book Club. Starting in January 2026 the book club will be an in-person meeting at the same time\, 3rd Wednesday of the month at 6:00pm in the library meeting room.  The Four Winds will be the selection for May 2026.  No registration required.  Questions please call the library at 808-697-7868. Mahalo. See a schedule of upcoming events on the HSPLS Events Calendar.
