About

Welcome to the Lanai Public and School Library! Designed by architect Edwin T. Murayama, our library opened its doors to the public on Oct. 15, 1975. Our public and school library is the seventh such facility in the state and the first in Maui county. Our library is the only place on the island that provides free Internet access and Wi-Fi for library card holders.

Ohana Readers and Imagination Library logosThe Lanai Public and School Library participates in ʻOhana Readers, a literacy program that focuses on reading with family as an affiliate program of Dolly Partonʻs Imagination Library. The program offers high-quality, age-appropriate Imagination Library books each month to children who are under the age of five. Dolly Partonʻs Imagination Library program is a zip code based mailing program. Families must live in the Lanai zip code (96763) to participate.

To register, download the registration form or visit the branch. You may return the form by mail or drop it off at the branch. The participating library will also offer programs that complement the books the children receive, and will provide other activities to promote literacy and reading.

For more information, visit the ‘Ohana Readers website.

Upcoming events at this branch

white and brown chess pieces on a chess board

Have you ever played chess? Do you want to learn? Are you an avid player and want to help others learn how to play?
Whatever your level of chess play we invite you to come and enjoy the game, learn new skills, share a little competition and get your chess on!

This program is open to all ages and levels of play.

We are dedicating a space every Friday afternoon from 2-3pm with a limited supply of boards and a handful of volunteers to bring the excitement of chess to our community.

Inspiring curiosity and creating opportunities for all to read, learn and connect!!

If you are interested in volunteering, please call for more information.

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program, service, or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible. Advance requests 48 hours or more before the event are encouraged, but not required.

Clay grey shark on blue clay ocean

Join visiting teaching artists from Hui No’eau Visual Art Center on Maui, for a fun & unique arts experience.

Come experiment and get creative with clay as you observe many diverse creatures that live in the Hawaiian reefs and surrounding open ocean. After choosing an image and observing an animal, you will sculpt colorful, oil based, modeling clay into all of the forms, details, and textures you see! When your animal is complete, you may create a habitat around it that captures the colors and features in the ocean, surrounding or (where we might encounter) this sea life. This clay does not dry out, so you can reimagine your animal and its habitat as many times as you like!

Come get creative, during this free event!

All ages welcome.

Sponsored in partner with Hui No`eau Visual Arts Center.

NO REGISTRATION, FIRST COME FIRST SERVE.
