Freedom to Read text with stack of booksWhat does Freedom to Read mean to you? For Hawaiʻi’s public libraries, it means ensuring that you have access to a wide range of materials that express diverse opinions.

We invite you to help us celebrate the freedom to read by participating in interactive displays at each branch October 5- 11, 2025. You can join the conversation by sharing what you’re reading or providing a recommendation to others. Look for the poster and stickers in your branch.

ALERT | In holiday observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, all public libraries will be closed on Monday, January 19, 2026.

ALERT | In holiday observance of Presidents' Day, all public libraries will be closed from Saturday to Monday, February 14 to 16, 2026.

ALERT | In holiday observance of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole Day, all public libraries will be closed on Thursday, March 26, 2026.

ALERT | The ʻAiea Public Library parking lot and access stairs from Hakina street will be closed beginning January 17 due to an unforeseen electrical issue. The Library will be open with parking on the street available. We apologize for the inconvenience as we work to resolve the issue.
