Welcome to the Keaau Public & School Library! Designed by Matsunaga, Sako, and Associates/Architects, Inc., we’re located on Keaau Middle School campus, and opened on Sept. 30, 1974. In 2014, we offered temporary free 24/7 Wi-Fi to Puna residents during June 27th lava flow and Hurricane Iselle’s devastation. Our library celebrated its 40th Anniversary on Nov. 25, 2014.

The History of the Sons of Hawai’i is an award-winning documentary that tells the story of the charismatic band that helped launch the Hawaiian cultural renaissance. Spanning forty years of Hawai’i’s rich musical tradition, this 80-minute film offers an intimate look at a unique group of performers and composers: their songs, their humor, and their devotion to a sound that continues to convey something essential about the Hawaiian spirit. Suitable for ages 7 and up.

In partnership with the Gemini Observatory, join us for an adventure in a portable planetarium where we will explore our solar system and galaxy. State-of-the-art projection equipment and software gives viewers a memorable tour of the skies above Hawaiʻi. We are excited to present a free program in collaboration with the State Department of Land & Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry & Wildlife (DLNR-DOFAW), aimed at educating the community about the Forest Reserve System, the Big Island Invasive Species Council, and how to “Plant Pono” for environmental stewardship.
Join us for this interactive 60-minute event, where a DLNR expert from Hawai‘i Island will discuss how to safeguard our environment and address the challenges posed by invasive species. Following the presentation, attendees will have the chance to create their own seed balls to take home, enhancing our local ecosystem’s sustainability.

Those Who Came Before: The Musical Journey of Eddie Kamae pays tribute to three remarkable teachers that have guided Eddie Kamae: the great author and translator Mary Kawena Pukui, the “Songwriter of Waipiʻo” Sam Liʻa, and “Aloha Chant” author Pilahi Paki. One by one, they entrusted Eddie with key pieces of Hawaiʻi’s heritage – inspiring him to understand, perform, and pass that heritage on to the children of Hawaiʻi. This 57-minute film is suitable for ages 7 and up.

In partnership with the East Hawai’i Master Gardeners we will be offering a free hydroponic gardening workshop. Hydroponic gardening is the practice of growing plants in water with the absence of soil. You will learn how hydroponic gardening is done. Participants will receive instructions on how to make an inexpensive and efficient DIY static hydroponic setup at home. This workshop is keiki friendly (suitable for ages 5 and up). If interested sign up by calling the library or coming in person.
