About

Welcome to the Kahului Public Library! Designed by Noboru Kobayashi, our library opened on Feb. 9, 1963. Native Hawaiian plants are featured in our yard and courtyard . We serve as the regional library and Federal Depository for Maui, offering enriching programs for all ages year-round.

The Library closed its doors in August 2020 to begin a comprehensive renovation project focused on upgrading its facilities and enhancing the overall user experience. In addition to replacing the aging air-conditioning system, the library underwent a series of interior improvements, including upgraded restrooms, new flooring, fresh paint, improved lighting, updated furniture, and newly designed signage. These enhancements were made to create a more welcoming, comfortable, and accessible environment for all patrons.

Despite careful planning, the renovation timeline was significantly impacted by unforeseen challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic led to widespread manufacturing and supply chain disruptions, while the departure of key personnel further delayed progress. These factors prevented HSPLS from completing the interior renovations in time for the originally projected reopening in December 2023. After navigating these setbacks, the Kahului Public Library proudly reopened to the public on July 12, 2025, unveiling a modernized space designed to better serve the community for years to come.
