Join Uncle Tim every Sunday morning at 10:30am for Family Storytime at Kaimuki Public Library. Families can enjoy stories, rhymes, songs, bubbles, and time for coloring or a small craft. Best for ages 3-5,  but all ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

Need a space away from home to study and get homework done (or any other quiet work), decompress, eat snacks, and/or hang out with friends? Come on by to the Kaimukī Public Library meeting room! Beginning September 7, 2025, the Library will be hosting a Teen Readers Lounge on the first Sunday of every month from 1pm — 4pm. Music will be playing to create an inviting and relaxing environment. Students are welcome to bring their own food, listen to their own music, and bring CDs of their choice to play for the room as well. With school back in session, the first Sunday of every month can set the tone for the rest of it—make new friends, discover a new interest or reconnect with an older one, set aside time to indulge in reading or your latest crafting hobby; the possibilities are endless and the choice is yours!

This recurring program series is for student ages 12 to 18. Registration is not required, and students can drop by anytime during the time of the event. For more information, please stop by the Reference Desk or give us a call at (808) 733–8422.

Come on over and join the fun—play Hanafuda with your fellow community members! We’re excited to let you know that after a summer break, we’re back with this program. We have several Hanafuda decks available during the event, on a first-come, first-served basis, for anyone eager to play. It’s a great chance to meet new friends, challenge yourself, and just have a good time! If you’ve learned how to play Hanafuda from Helen Nakano and her Sensei, now’s your moment to practice those skills in a friendly game.

This will be a relaxed, self-directed play session—no formal instructions will be provided. However, we’ll have instruction sheets available for those interested in learning more about this wonderful game. Everyone, no matter your experience level, is welcome to join! Aloha pumehana kākou!  We are continuing the  Basic Hawaiian Language class for those interested in learning ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi in a fun and engaging way.  This class taught by Librarian Moki Renti Cruz will incorporate Hawaiian songs as a tool to help build vocabulary and understand sentence structure.  No prior music experience needed, although for this program as it is a continuation of the previous Hawaiian language class, and therefore may be more difficult for those without prior Hawaiian language experience.

Did you know that before the Hawaiian language was first printed in the 1820s, it was passed down orally for generations? It’s a rich and beautiful tradition we are excited to share with you!

This class is recommended for youth ages 13 and up.  Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Want to get better at reading?  Are you an animal lover?  Why not practice your reading skills by reading aloud to Nugget, a therapy dog from Pet Partners, a national organization that has helped to evaluate and support therapy animal teams since 1977.  This is a great opportunity for beginning readers to practice their reading skills with a totally non-judgmental listener.

Did you know reading to dogs can boost your reading skills in children as well as help with emotional and social skills!?

This program is open to people of all ages.  Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult or caregiver.  As spaces are limited, registration is required as it will be based on a first come first served basis on the day of the program. Call (808)733-8422 or stop by the library to sign up for the program.  On the day of the program a sign up sheet for 5-10 minutes will be made available prior to the start of the program at the Adult Reference Desk.

Pull up to the movie premiere of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle in style! Recreate Tanjiro’s famous Hanafuda earrings, any of the Hashira’s signature patterns, or make other Demon Slayer inspired decor. All materials to design earrings, pendants, or keychains will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own supply. Food and light refreshments will also be available, and cosplay is encouraged. While you craft and eat, the Demon Slayer Movie: Kimetsu no Yaiba Mugen Train will be playing in the background.

This program will take place in Kaimukī Public Library’s Meeting Room, and is suitable for ages 12 — 18. Children under 12 are to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Enjoy the movie classic The Lion King all over again, but with an added twist: an audience sing-along!  Mics won’t be provided but you can sing as loud, as soft or not at all, from the comfort of your seat! How fun is that? 

Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his.

This live action movie is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association (MPA) for sequences of violence and peril, and some thematic elements. Parental guidance is suggested.  Young children need to be accompanied by either a parent or legal guardian.
