Book Club

December 12, 2024 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

cover of The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander

Join us for our December book club pick, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander. This book is a stunning account of the rebirth of a caste-like system in the United States, one that has resulted in millions of African Americans locked behind bars and then relegated to a permanent second-class status. Since its publication in 2010, The New Jim Crow has appeared on the New York Times bestseller list for more than a year and has led to consciousness-raising efforts in universities, churches, community centers, re-entry centers, and prisons nationwide. The New Jim Crow tells a truth our nation has been reluctant to face (via the book’s website).

Copies are available at the Honokaa Public Library circulation desk. All books are chosen by members of the group.

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program, service, or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible. Advance requests 48 hours or more before the event are encouraged, but not required. All programs are subject to change. For a list of upcoming library events, visit the HSPLS Events Calendar.
