How Do I Explore the Deep Ocean?

April 27, 2024 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Join deep-sea biologist and explorer Aaron Judah in a crash course on the deep-sea and the tools scientists use to explore it. Meet some of the denizens of the deep – from angler fishes and cookiecutter sharks, to the fangtooth and snipe eel (that you can hold in your hands!). We’ll also check out videos from baited cameras and remotely operated vehicles that scientists use to explore diverse habitats and identify unique species. Aaron will guide you through how these species are able to survive the extreme environments, and how they benefit humanity and the functioning of the ocean ecosystem. We’ll end off with a group discussion to share your ideas on what the deep ocean does for you and how we can best conserve it for the future.

Children must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or caregiver.

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program, service, or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible. Advance requests 48 hours or more before the event are encouraged, but not required.
