“I’m ceded – I’ve stopped being Their’s – …” / A Brief Portrait of Mature Emily Dickinson & Her Work

March 9, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

light painting of Emily Dickinson

Join us for an evening discussion of the poetry of Emily Dickinson with presenter Carol Hogard. This lecture will begin with a short selection of Dickinson’s nature poetry and poems that illustrate extreme psychological states. There will also be a brief sample of poems illustrating her relationship to her internal force:  a muse/daemon spirit—the genius of poetry and a brief introduction to recently available “scrap” poems: “GEORGEOUS NOTHINGS” and the “ENVELOPE POEMS”. Finally, attendees will learn how to enter her work using the Hawaii Library system’s collection. A bibliography will be provided. The 90-minute program is free and open to adults and interested students.

Ms. Hogard is a retired professor from Minneapolis Community & Technical College, who was part of the team that created the first Women’s Studies program in a community college in the upper Midwest.

Program schedule is subject to change. Contact the library 15 days in advance to request a sign language interpreter or if special accommodations are needed.
