About

Welcome to the North Kohala Public Library! Designed by CDS International, our $7.8 million, 6,000 sq.-ft. “green” library opened on Nov. 8, 2010. In Dec. 2011, we became the first HSPLS library and first state building in Hawai‘i to achieve LEED Gold Certification. Creative and innovative design features including wind and photovoltaic energy systems have helped us save about $1,500 annually on electricity bills.

Book Cover of Breadfruit

Join author Russell Fielding for a talk about his new book, Breadfruit: Three Global Journeys of a Bountiful Tree.

“Breadfruit: Three Global Journeys of a Bountiful Tree by Russell Fielding is a book that traces the history of the breadfruit (‘ulu) plant through three major global movements: its ancient spread across the Pacific by Polynesian voyagers, its forced introduction to the Caribbean for enslaved people, and its modern resurgence as a climate-resilient “superfood” for global food security. Fielding combines historical research with travelogues and interviews with local experts to explore the fruit’s cultural, culinary, and political significance, from its origins in Southeast Asia to its potential future role in sustainable development.“

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek book cover

Join the discussion of The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson.

Excerpt from Goodreads.com:”In 1936, tucked deep into the woods of Troublesome Creek, KY, lives blue-skinned 19-year-old Cussy Carter, the last living female of the rare Blue People ancestry.

The lonely young Appalachian woman joins the historical Pack Horse Library Project of Kentucky and becomes a librarian, riding across slippery creek beds and up treacherous mountains on her faithful mule to deliver books and other reading material to the impoverished hill people of Eastern Kentucky.

Along her dangerous route, Cussy, known to the mountain folk as Bluet, confronts those suspicious of her damselfly-blue skin and the government’s new book program. She befriends hardscrabble and complex fellow Kentuckians, and is fiercely determined to bring comfort and joy, instill literacy, and give to those who have nothing, a bookly respite, a fleeting retreat to faraway lands.”
