Waimea Public Library

About

Welcome to the Waimea Public Library! Designed by architect Guy Rothwell, our 3,724 sq. ft. library is located on Kaumuali‘i Highway across from Waimea High School. One of the smallest libraries in the state library system, Waimea Public Library supports a diverse and ever-changing community.

Ohana Readers and Imagination Library logosThe Waimea Public Library participates in ʻOhana Readers, a literacy program that focuses on reading with family as an affiliate program of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. The program offers high-quality, age-appropriate Imagination Library books each month to children who are under the age of five.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program is a zip code based mailing program. Families must live in these specific Kaua‘i zip codes to participate.

To register, click your ZIP code to download the registration form or visit the library. You may return the form by mail or drop it off at the branch. The participating library will also offer programs that complement the books the children receive, and will provide other activities to promote literacy and reading.

For more information, go to the ‘Ohana Readers website.

Upcoming events at this branch

Librarian and children at storytime program

Families with young children are invited to read, sing, and play at the library!

For the first 30 minutes, children are welcome to drop in for open play with the library’s toy collection. For the second 30 minutes, the librarian will read aloud and sing songs (with help from the grown-ups!). Sometimes we do a simple craft or art activity at the end!

Please note that program content is targeted toward toddlers and preschool-aged children. However, younger and older siblings are welcome to attend too. All young children must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program, service or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible. Advance requests 48 hours or more before the event are encouraged, but not required.

Pokemon Club

Learn to play the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG)! Demo decks will be provided for learning and casual game play.

This program is especially for kids ages 5-14 but fans of all ages are welcome to join. Young children must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Sara, an award winning journalist and author, will share the story of her family’s efforts to hold onto ancestral lands on Maui. Her book, Kuleana: A Story of Family, Land, and Legacy in Old Hawaiʻi, explores the ache of generational land loss, identity and belonging, and what it means to keep culture alive while being part of the Hawaiian diaspora. Paperback copies of Kuleana will be available for purchase following the talk.

Mahalo to the Friends of Waimea Public Library for co-sponsoring this author talk.

Do you need a kickstart for that novel you’ve been meaning to write? Have you gotten “stuck” in the middle of writing your memoirs? Or would you like feedback on your latest poem? If so, consider joining the West Side Writers’ Group at the library!

This drop-in group is open to adults who write creative fiction, nonfiction, and/or poetry. We begin with a writing prompt to warm up, then the rest of our time is for sharing work and giving feedback.

Since writing is usually a solitary activity, it can be helpful to join a gathering of people who share your interest. Please note that this is not a formal class, but a casual workshop to offer and receive encouragement. We usually meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month.

For ages 18 and up. Light refreshments will be served thanks to the Friends of Waimea Public Library.

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program, service, or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible.
