About

Welcome to the Kailua-Kona Public Library! Designed by architect George Iwasaki, our library opened on a leap day – Feb. 29, 1992. It is the second largest and second busiest library on Hawai‘i Island. We have a drive-through bookdrop and won an exemplary architectural design award from the Commission on Persons with Disabilities.

Join Teen Book Club, where we meet once a month to discuss young adult books. New participants are welcome and encouraged to bring suggestions!

Our April group read is, Apple (Skin to the Core), a poetic memoir for young adults by Eric Gansworth. Copies of the book are available for pick-up at our Circulation Desk. Join our discussion in-person or contact the library for virtual access.

T.A.G. Meeting Teen Advisory Group Join the T.A.G. Team!

From planning programs to curating collections, here is your chance to get involved at the library and build community with like-minded teens!

Join our Teen Advisory Group (T.A.G) to tailor young adult library services, spaces, and collections to your interests. Being a T.A.G. team member is also a great way to earn volunteer service hours and leadership experience throughout the year. Visit the Young Adult Room to pick up an application.

Stephen and Nancee Cline will enchant you with guitar music and poetry, weaving together their favorite themes of love for nature and the joys and nostalgia for family.

  • Poet, author, and retired Hawaii Community College teacher Nancee Cline, has published numerous books focusing on local history and poetry, bringing our community’s stories to life for all ages.
  • Professional musician, retired English professor, and published author, Stephen Cline is known for his accomplished playing on guitar and piano, and his sensitive and intelligent lyrics.

Come see the big reveal of the mural in the Children’s Room! Show off your hard work, and check out the new artistic addition to the library. Light refreshments will be served.

This program is appropriate for children and families of all ages; No RSVP required, come check it out!

Teen Cinema Club featuring movie poster for Mean Girls

Movie fans are invited to join the Teen Cinema Club for a free screening of, Mean Girls (PG-13), the Early Aughts teen classic. Wear pink to enter a raffle! 

Movie suggestions for a future film screening are welcome!
An assortment of snacks will be served while supplies last.
This program is suitable for middle schoolers and high schoolers.

Teen Book Spine Poetry Contest featuring a stack of books stating: Tokyo Ghoul / Gunslinger Girl / Divine Rivals / This Is How You Fall in Love

Visit the library and build a unique poem using the titles of young adult books!

  • Teens are invited to submit stacks of poetry April 1st through April 18th.
  • Voting is open to all ages from April 21st through April 30th.
  • The winner will be contacted on May 1st to select a gift card of their choice!

Free Comic Book Day and Comics Giveaway Day logos with May 2, 2026 date

On Saturday, May 2, visit this participating library and pick out a free comic book of your choice. Quantities are limited and are available while supplies last. Some comic titles include:

  • Energon Universe (Transformers, G.I. Joe)
  • Garfield
  • Avatar: The Last Airbender
  • Armageddon X-Men / Avengers
  • Spidey & His Amazing Friends

Costumed character appearances will be available at select O‘ahu libraries. Call for availability and/or schedule.
