About

Welcome to the Kailua-Kona Public Library! Designed by architect George Iwasaki, our library opened on a leap day – Feb. 29, 1992. It is the second largest and second busiest library on Hawai‘i Island. We have a drive-through bookdrop and won an exemplary architectural design award from the Commission on Persons with Disabilities.

Do you enjoy reading, trivia, and teamwork? Join the Page Masters, a competitive book club for youth in the 4th through 7th grades.

Together, team members will read, study, and prepare for participation in the annual Big Island Heluhelu Quiz Bowl (April 16, 2026) for a chance to win top prizes and meet an award-winning author.

Hualalai volcano behind beach in Kailua-Kona Hawaii

Often overlooked in the shadow of Kīlauea and Mauna Loa, Hualālai is the island’s third most active volcano, having erupted most recently a couple hundred years ago.

Join USGS-Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologist Natalia Deligne, who will describe Hualālai’s most recent eruptions, the 1929 unrest that shook Kona for several weeks, and what might happen in the future. We will also touch on the ongoing eruption at the summit of Kīlauea and the volcanic hazard Kona residents are most familiar with: volcanic air pollution (vog).

Movie fans are invited to join the Teen Cinema Club for a free screening of, The Outsiders: the Complete Novel (PG-13), a more-true-to-the-novel special edition of Coppola’s classic film. 

Bring a movie suggestion for a future TCC screening.
An assortment of snacks will be served while supplies last.
This program is suitable for middle schoolers and high schoolers.
