About

Welcome to the Kailua-Kona Public Library! Designed by architect George Iwasaki, our library opened on a leap day – Feb. 29, 1992. It is the second largest and second busiest library on Hawai‘i Island. We have a drive-through bookdrop and won an exemplary architectural design award from the Commission on Persons with Disabilities.

Join Julia for Babies, Books, and Blankets, a lap-sit for babies and toddlers, 0-24 months.

Bring your babies and a comfortable blanket to sit on. Together, we will read, sing, rhyme, and play to encourage family bonding and help build our littlest library users’ early literacy skills.

Welcome to Foodland D&D

Join our Teen D&D adventure where you will be whisked away to a land made entirely of food! Create a character, battle the rot, and save the realm one bite at a time.

This program is suitable for middle schoolers and high schoolers.

Join Julia for a special storytime series for the whole family! This series centers on kalo, maiʻa, ʻulu, and ʻuala — nourishing foods that have fed families in Hawaiʻi for generations.

Our second session will focus on maiʻa (banana). Come have a taste!

Kahaluʻu is a wahi pana, a sacred and storied place, and is known as ʻāina lei aliʻi, a land adorned by the chiefs.

Learn about what has made Kahaluʻu so special for generations, listen to moʻolelo (stories) about how the practice of kilo (intentional observation) has guided our stewardship efforts at the bay, and hear how to join our ReefTeach ‘ohana and become a volunteer!

The Kohala Center’s ReefTeach program is a community-driven stewardship effort aimed at increasing the resiliency of the coastal ecosystem at Kahaluʻu through education, outreach, research, and advocacy.

Magic The Gathering

Players of all skill levels are invited to join us for a monthly series of Magic: the Gathering sessions. 

Participants are encouraged to bring their own decks; a limited quantity of in-house decks are available for use.

HOLIDAY CLOSURE | In state observance of King Kamehameha I Day, all public libraries will be closed on Thursday, June 11, 2026.

ALERT | Libraries will observe the Independence Day holiday July 3–5, 2026. Most libraries will be closed Friday, July 3; however, ʻAiea, ʻĀina Haina, Hanapēpē, Hawai‘i Kai, Hilo, Kahului, Kailua-Kona, Kīhei, Liliha, Makawao, McCully-Mōʻiliʻili, Princeville, Thelma Parker, Wahiawā, Waialua, Waimānalo, Waikīkī-Kapahulu, and Waipahu will be open July 3 and closed Saturday, July 4.

HOLIDAY CLOSURE | In observance of Statehood Day, all public libraries will be closed on Friday, August 21, 2026.
