Meet Kohala-based writer Virginia Fortner, author of At the Edge and A Design of His Own. Fortner will discuss “birthing” her latest book, China Conundrum, and how she developed her first two books. She also will share excerpts about writing books and appreciating them as readers.

Fortner is a lifetime educator and traveler who has spent time on every continent. Her poems and short stories have been published in writers journals, newspapers, and several book collections. Her recent mixed-genre fiction, China Conundrum, braids a travelog, teaching adventures, and political contrasts with uncertain romance. Fortner will be available to sign copies of her books after the program.

Calling all Trainers! Come hang out, talk all things Pokémon, learn how to play from scratch, battle with friends, and participate in Pokémon themed activities. Decks will be provided for learning and casual game play.

Hawaiʻi Poet Laureate Lee A. Tonouchi wen go lose his mom in one tragic car accident when he was 2. He remembahs his family nevah really talked about her death. Everybody just held in their grief and carried on. Later on in life, Lee discovered that writing about da people you lose can actually be cathartic, healing, and help make it OK for oddah people to share their stories. In dis workshop, Lee going share more about his personal writing journey. An’den, using his technique of “talk story poetry,” he going encourage workshop attendees for write their own pieces honoring those dey wen lose. We welcome attendees from age 14+ to join us in creating a safe space for writing, reflection, and sharing.

On the first Saturday of each month, the Waimea Arts Council (WAC), in partnership with Thelma Parker Memorial Public Library, instructs a class  on a variety of art forms.  WAC artists create monthly classes about art, from watercolors to sculpting.  The classes are held in the library meeting room, with all supplies provided by the Waimea Arts Council.  Class size is limited and advance registration is required for each class.  Come in person or call Thelma Parker Library at 808-887-6067 to register.
