Celebrate Chinese New Year @ Lahaina Library

January 26, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Celebrate Chinese New Years in Lahaina design including a pig with decorative design on it

Talk Story with Dr. Busaba Yip – she will tell us of the Year of the Pig and the history of the Lion Dance.

Saturday, January 26 at 11 AM.

All Ages Welcome.

The date for New Year’s Day is determined by the lunar calendar, usually occurring between January 21 and February 20. Each year, the date falls on the second new moon after the Winter solstice. The ancient Chinese calendar on which the lunar new year is based, functioned as a religious, dynastic and social guide presided over by the 12-year cycle of the animal zodiac.

Legend tells us that Buddha summoned all the animals of the forest to him but only 12 answered. To honor these animals, Buddha named each year according to the order in which the animals appeared: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog, pig.
