Book Group Discussion – “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City”

January 18, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Evicted Book cover

For the month of January, the HSL Book Group will discuss Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond (call number 339.46097 De).

This 2016 nonfiction bestseller follows eight Milwaukee families living below the poverty line and struggling to find housing in a punishing rental market. Author Matthew Desmond, a sociologist and a co-director of Harvard’s Justice and Poverty Project, lived among both white and black tenants in substandard conditions, including units dangerously not up to property code, infested with insects, and lacking basic appliances such as a stove.

The HSL Book Group meets on the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Language, Literature, and History Section. New members are always welcome. No registration necessary.

Program schedule is subject to change. Contact the library 10 days in advance to request a sign language interpreter or if special accommodations are needed.
