A Program of Artist Tambi Larsen’s Whimsical Kaua’i Scenes

American artist Tambi Larsen (1914 – 2001), Academy Award winner for art direction, spent several months of his retirement each year at a beach house in Ha’ena. During this time, Larsen decided to visually celebrate natural and man-made settings around the island and thus began a body of artwork he called “One Hundred Entertainments.”  His ingenious color drawings feature buildings and architectural features combined with scenery.  From 1988 to 1991 he exhibited on the island and his work was quickly bought by appreciative residents and collectors. In collaboration with Kauai Historical Society, Lihue Public Library will host a public program on Tambi Larsen, and his “Entertainments,” including a few original pieces. A presentation by Robert Schleck, Director of Grove Farm Homestead Museum, and the historical society publications committee, will be a rare opportunity to see unique scenes of island communities created by this renowned movie art director who loved Kaua’i and cleverly distilled local scenes into vivid drawings that captured the essence of those places and times.
