Please join us for a fascinating presentation by Stan Yogi, co-author of the new children’s book, Fred Korematsu Speaks Up. Using a power point presentation, Mr. Yogi will explain the connections he and his co-author have to the book and what led them to write it. He will then introduce us to the subject of his book, Fred Korematsu, a civil rights icon and a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient.
Fred Korematsu Speaks Up is the story of a heroic man who challenges federal government about legitimacy of the Japanese-American incarceration during World War II. He lost his case and was imprisoned, but in 1988 finally prevailed to receive a full pardon. While explaining Fred’s story, Mr. Yogi will also provide the broader historical context about this particular time period. Fred Korematsu’s story is even more compelling when viewed against the contemporary civil rights issues today.
Although the targeted audience of this book, Fred Korematsu Speaks Up, is for grades 4 to 8, this presentation is suitable for anyone who wants to learn about the Japanese-American incarceration during World War II, and about one-man’s fight for the civil rights for all. Mr. Yogi will also be speaking at JCCH on Thursday, July 13, 2017.
