Nānākuli Public Library will welcome Helen Nakano to speak about her growing understanding of Hawaiian culture through the development of the Na Pua cards. Sensei Julia Ishado, Amy Hagihara, Alison Kimura and Rosemary Nishi will help teach everyone, including children 7 and older, accompanied by an adult. If time permits, the program will end with a mini-tournament.

According to Helen Nakano, founder of Hanafuda Hawaii, “The local style of playing this ancient Japanese card game, Hanafuda, is easy to learn. It’s a game that can be played in 15 minutes. I believe that it is so important for young and old to play together. When you bring moʻopuna and kupuna together in play, magic happens. Kupuna grow young and the young grow happy.”
