About

Welcome to the Kealakekua Public Library! Designed by architect Howard Redfearn, our library opened on Oct. 14, 1950. The original portion of our library was built with native lava rock and ʻōhiʻa logs. Located in West Hawaii, our library serves residents from Keauhou-Kona to Ocean View in the Ka‘u District.

It is the Year of the Storymaker at Kealakekua Public Library!

We invite you to a dedicated evening for writing, collaboration, and creative exchange. Work independently or share ideas with other writers. This is our third writer’s event and we’re grateful for the interest from our local creatives!

Discover the art of block printing in this hands-on workshop for teens and adults. Participants will learn the fundamentals of printmaking while creating a custom bird design.

In this session, you’ll carve or work with a prepared block, apply ink, and print your design onto paper to create multiple unique prints. Along the way, you’ll explore how to layer, experiment with color, and embrace the creative surprises that make printmaking so fun.

All materials will be provided, and no prior art experience is necessary. Whether you’re an experienced artist or just looking to try something new, this workshop offers a relaxed, creative space to learn a new skill and take home your own handmade art.

We welcome teens and adults ages 12 and up to this program sponsored by Friends of the Libraries, Kona (F.O.L.K.).

Learn to play the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG)! Demo decks will be provided for learning and casual game play.

This program is especially for kids ages 5-14 but fans of all ages are welcome to join. Young children must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Science sparks at your library!

Each month brings a surprise hands-on science activity – mix, build, explore, and discover something new! For curious kids ages 6 and up. Come spark your imagination!

The Kaimukī and Pearl City branches, which are normally open on Sundays, will also be closed on April 5, in observance of Easter.
